By preparing an excess amount alcholic solution using the al + nitro (dropwise to keep temp down, well below reflux) of which after the reaction is done, filter off the sludge. Use this solution to the al/hg with the ketone (now needing less al than the standard almalgam). As this solution refluxes and evaporates off, have a funnel dripping in new MeNH2 solution in to replace it, thus assuring a consistent amount of methylamine. Hopefully the cleanup would be much easier this way, allowing the oil to be extracted easier. Please give opinions.

It's only my impression, I can't be sure, but I think you will loss some methylamine in the reduction of the nitro, even keeping temp low, and filtering the sludge with vacuum. If you add the ketone in the same pot, lost of methylamine will be less, and finally the work is the same, you have to filter two times or one time all. Just my opinion.
